What is an ATA Telephone Adapter?

ATA is short for Analog Telephone Adapter. An ATA device enables the connection of standard analog telephone devices to a digital phone system, such as a VoIP phone system, so that users can make phone calls over the internet. An ATA device is normally a small box device which has a power supply, an ethernet port and an FXS (Foreign Exchange Station) port as well as possibly an FXO link to other phones and the PBX etc.
